Preparing your Manuscript

When preparing your manuscript, we encourage you to keep the accessibility of Mediapolis in mind: While our primary readership is academic, the journal’s interdisciplinarity means that not all theoretical frameworks, concepts, and jargon will be familiar to all readers.

Unless discussed differently with the respective section editor, all contributions should have a length of c. 3000 words for dossier contributions and c. 4000 words for Deep Dives (both including notes). All submitted manuscripts are edited according to the Chicago Manual of Style notes and bibliography system. Following this style in the preparation of your manuscript helps ensure a timely publication.

For example, for a book:

Full note: First Name Last Name, Title of the Book (Publisher, Year), Page-Page.

Shortened note: Last Name, Title of the Book, Page.

For example, for a journal article:

Full note: First Name Last Name, “Title of the Article,” Title of the Journal Issue, Number (Year): Page–Page, https://doi.org/Number.

Shortened note: Last Name, “Title of the Article,” Page.

You can find more information and examples for the reference style here. Both UK and US spelling and punctuation are possible within this reference style, as long as they are consistently applied throughout your contribution.

For all submissions, please make sure that you include the following information at the top of your contribution:

  • A tagline (max. 40 words) after the title of your manuscript. A full abstract is not necessary.

The tagline should include your name and a key argument of the article, to help readers get a first impression of your contribution.

  • 5-7 keywords for your contribution.

Keywords should be specific to your contribution and argument.

  • A biography (max. 150 words) for all authors.

Optionally, you can also send us an author portrait to be displayed with your biography.

  • A featured image (2000×1400 px, in landscape orientation, max. 1MB) to be displayed at the top of your contribution.

If you are not using any images in your contribution, you are free to also suggest a thematically fitting stock image.

Beyond the featured image, Mediapolis encourages the inclusion of images, screenshots and stills (max. 1 MB per image) within your article. For all images that you would like to use, please include:

  • A brief caption including the source/copyright.

For most types of images, scholarly analysis and discusses falls under the terms  of fair use (provided the source is explicitly stated). As author, you are responsible for checking what regulations apply to the material you use in your contribution.

If you have (public) social media accounts on Instagram, Facebook or Bluesky and would like to be tagged in posts promoting your article, please share your usernames together with your final manuscript.
