Miguel Valdez

Miguel Valdez

Miguel Valdez is a Senior Lecturer in Technology and Innovation Management in the School of Engineering and Innovation at the Open University. His research is centred on urban experiments to anticipate, govern and develop more sustainable urban futures. Through his research, Miguel has developed an interest in the ways in which different actors make sense of innovative technologies and develop competing imaginaries about future urban environments. Miguel’s work has increasingly focused on urban Artificial Intelligence and with attention to the mutually constitutive relationship of AI and cities.

Fictions of Frontier AI in Cities: Living and Learning with Less-Than-Human Intelligences

Miguel Valdez
Not HAL 9000, but an "icebox on wheels" delivering groceries. Miguel Valdez argues that utopian and dystopian imaginaries of superhuman AI do the same work, drawing attention from the narrowly intelligent robots already negotiating city streets, and from what it takes to make meaning with them.
